Winners Gain National Recognition, Become Eligible for a Total of Nearly $4 Million in Scholarships
Deadline: December 6 (art) & December 7 (writing)
In partnership with the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to recognizing the nation’s most talented teen artists and writers, F Magazine, Trailer Art Center and Out North Contemporary Art House have launched the call for entries to the 2012 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The national awards competition, entering its 89th year, is the nation’s longest-running, most prestigious scholarship and recognition program for student achievement in the visual and literary arts. This is the second year the writing competition has been held in the state of Alaska, and the third consecutive year for the art competition.
Creative teens in grades 7-12 are invited to submit work in 28 categories of art and writing, including film and animation, video game design, sculpture, photography, fashion design, poetry, journalism, humor, dramatic script and science fiction. The Alaska-based organizations are among the 115 affiliate organizations nationwide, and the sole administers of The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards in Alaska. The submissions are first judged locally. 49 Writers will jury the writing entries on behalf of F Magazine, and artist/UAA art instructor Jimmy Riordan will oversee the judging of art entries on behalf of Out North and Trailer Art Center. Top winning works will then be presented to national panels of creative leaders to determine which receive the highest honors. Last year, two of Alaska’s youth, Jeong A. Lee (art) and Shanae’a Moore (writing), won on the national level.
In January, the statewide winners of the 2011 competition will have their work showcased at Out North Contemporary Art House. Winning writers will have their work read aloud by experienced readers and actors and the entire event will be streamed online for students unable to attend. For the second year in a row, the statewide art and writing winners will be published in the April issue of F Magazine.
Since 1923, nine million students from around the nation have been recognized through exhibitions and publications, and have shared in more than $25 million in awards and scholarships. Winners include a long list of distinguished alumni, including Andy Warhol, Robert Redford, Sue Miller, Richard Avedon, Zac Posen, Joyce Carol Oates, Tom Otterness, Sylvia Plath, John Lithgow, Ned Vizzini, Philip Pearlstein and John Baldessari.
