Statewide Writing Competition Guidelines

ELIGIBILITY
F Magazine’s Second Annual Statewide Writing Competition is open to all poets and writers, whether published or not, regardless of experience, residing anywhere in Alaska. We’re not sticklers on what defines “resident,” we just ask writers to take into consideration that this competition is promote the talent within and from our state, and elevate public awareness of this talent.
Current F Magazine board members are not eligible, but content contributors are.
Previously published poems and short stories in other contests, books, magazines, etc. are accepted and welcomed as long as they are original works created by the contest entrant(s).
Submissions must be typed, single-spaced, 12-point font, (preferably Times New Roman) with standard one inch margins.
Multiple entries are accepted and you may submit entries to both the poetry, fiction and nonfiction contest, at the same time.
Entries can be submitted via email or U.S. Postal Service. Payment must accompany submission.
POETRY
All poems must be 2 pages or less (or 86 lines) on any subject or theme.
FICTION
All fiction must be no more than 10 pages and may be on any subject or theme and in any style. For example, all short fiction, flash fiction, novel excerpts, and screenplays are accepted.
NONFICTION
All nonfiction must be no more than 5 pages and may be on any subject or theme and in any style. For example, all non-fiction stories, essays, diary/journal entries and autobiographies are accepted.
U.S. POSTAL SUBMISSION: Be sure to include a check or money order made out to F Magazine (one fee per entry, one entry per envelope), and a completed competition entry form.
Do not include your name on your writing submission!!!
Postmark deadline is May 1.
EMAIL SUBMISSION: Entries sent electronically can only be sent as email attachments in the word processing documents: Microsoft Word (.doc), Microsoft Word (docx), or Word Perfect (.wpd). Each poem, story, et al. must be contained within its own document. Please title your electronic document: “(your last name), writing competition”.

Please note there is an additional $ .30 service charge per individual submission.
Once you’ve paid, please email your submission(s) and competition entry form to competition@fhideout.org. In the subject line please put your last name and either poetry, fiction, or nonfiction – or all that apply to your submission.

Entries will not be returned.
All contest winners will be notified, announced and published online on our Competitions page on June 1, 2012.
FEES
The entry fee for poetry is $5 per poem.
The entry fee for nonfiction, essays, et al is $7 per piece.
The entry fee for fiction, flash fiction, et al is $10 per piece.

Nonfiction First Place $60
Nonfiction Second Place $30
Fiction First Place $70
Fiction Second Place $35
Winners will be published in the June 2012 issue of F Magazine.
First, Second and Third Place Winners will all receive an award certificate and mention in both print and on-line.
DECISIONS
All works will be submitted to our judging committee anonymously. Until the winners are announced June 1, 2012, the judging committee will maintain its own anonymity. All poems are judged on the basis of originality, creativity, characterization, artistic quality, adherence to the 2-page/86-line limit. All fiction and nonfiction entries are judged based on their originality, creative imagination, character introduction and development; plot development, story arc and adherence to the (10) page limit. All decisions by the judges are final.
PRIVACY POLICY:
F Magazine does not release or sell customer or contest entrant information to third parties or mailing lists, nor will you receive telephone solicitations, whatsoever – not even from us. We occasionally send customer, contest entrants and members of our mailing news about Dream Quest One products and contests (no more than twice a month). You may opt out of these notices at any time by sending a request to magazine@fhideout.org.
RIGHTS:
All poems and stories remain the property of the artist who wrote or created them. By submitting a poem/story for this contest, the artist may also be eligible for the publication of her or his work in F Magazine, and submitted for national small publication competitions.
NOTIFICATION:
All prizewinners will be notified by postal mail, email or by telephone. The first place winners will have their work published in the June 2012 issue of F Magazine. The top three winning entries of all three categories will have their names and brief biographical information published in the June 2012 issue of F Magazine and all winning works will be published on our website.
