Eligibility

F-Action, F Magazine’s Second Annual Statewide Music Video Competition is open to all Alaska residents. “Resident” is defined as someone who resides in Alaska at least six months out of the year. We’re not sticklers on this definition, we just ask entrants to take into consideration that this competition is to promote the talent within and from our state, and to elevate public awareness of this talent.

Current F Magazine board members and contributors are eligible – all entries will be judged by Outside directors and producers.

Music Videos made prior to 2015 are accepted and welcome.

Multiple entries are accepted, but must be submitted individually.

Registration deadline is June 1, 2015. The filmmaker or primary video representative must pay the submission fee of $25 and submit a registration form.

Submission of completed video deadline is Sept. 6, 2015. The music video must be submitted on disc in high definition .mov format via USPS postdated no later than September 6, 2015.

The Music
The music does not have to be created by Alaska residents, however, residency is preferred and will be taken into consideration by the judges.

Music must be original – no cover tunes are permitted (music written and recorded by a musician or band other than the one used in the video).

Film maker must have the signed approval of the band/music representative to be included with the disc when mailed by September 6, 2015.

The Video

There must be closing credits with full names of all individuals and entities involved in the process of making the video, including all names involved in the music recording. The music video must be no longer than 10 minutes. Closing end credits are included in the 10 minute limit. The end credits cannot play until the end of the music video.

The F-Action Music Video Waiver/Registration Form must by signed by the representative/owner of the music video, giving F Magazine the exclusive right to premiere the video during the months of November 2015 and June 2016, permission to screen the video through 2016, and permission to broadcast video on the F Magazine website for infinity.

The representative/owner(s) of the music video entry retains full ownership of the music video and may simultaneously submit entry to other film/music competitions.

Judging
Judging is based on a rubric that specifically looks at:
A) Content- 25 percent
• Creativity- the overall originality of the video; use of original ideas and style
• Coherence- does the video tell a story, or add context to the song

B) Quality of Production – 25 percent
• Visual Aesthetics – the appearance of the video
• Cinematography- quality of the audio, lighting, camera steadiness

C) Technical Skill – 25 percent
• Camera operation
• Video Editing

D) Final Product – 25 percent
• Cohesiveness
• Overall Creativity
• Overall Accuracy of Information
• Overall Video Quality

AWARDS
Judges will pick 1st, 2nd & 3rd place winners and judges’ choice awards. A fully tally of both the rubric and judges’ choices is used to award the F-Bomb!
The awards celebration will be held in November at Tap Root in Anchorage. This is a gala event with live music to silent films and a screening of the winning videos. Subsequently, the winning entries will go to several film festivals around the state, and will be entered in film festivals Outside for consideration.

WHY AN ENTRY FEE
A competition is expensive. Even though F is entirely comprised of volunteers, marketing, media, posters, postage, printing, DVD copies, trophies and space rental are not free. The entry fee just covers a tiny portion of the competition. The rest is covered through begging, pleading and scraping our own pockets. And that’s the truth of it.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Entries will not be returned.

All contest winners will be notified, announced and published online on our Competitions page by Nov. 1, 2015. Statewide premiers of winning videos and runner ups will be announced and held prior to Dec. 31, 2015.

Hello, I have a few questions.
What do you mean by a “music bed”? If we wish to use a song from a band, they need to sign a music release form, and their song must be an original? Also, when making the music video, can we simply create it, or do we have to be in it?

    Yours,
    Anne

I would like to encourage my students to submit, but what do they win?

      Hello Jill,
The winners of the music video competition win trophies, but they also have their work showcased at the big screening party in November, and several film festivals around the state, and then submitted to film festivals Outside for consideration as well.
I wish we could offer a monetary award, but as we are a volunteer run organization with no paid staff, we don’t really have the budget for it. The entry fees go to securing quality judges, trophies and the awards ceremony. Please feel free to contact us directly should you have any further questions!
      Best,

Some of these dates seem to be for the 2012 version of the contest. Is everything same for the 2013 year?

“giving F Magazine the exclusive right to premiere the video during the months of November and December 2012, permission to screen the video through 2013, and permission to broadcast video on the F Magazine website for infinity.”

Thanks for bringing this to our attention – the site went down the other day and we did not notice that it had reverted to the old posting. It is updated now and the link to the competition registration site is back in place. Good luck!

There are still date errors on this page unless this is the second F Magazine’s First Annual Statewide Music Video Competition and the submission deadline was 1 Sep 2012.

Ain’t editing a bitch, eh, Teeka?
