F open house meeting 12/12/09 | NOTES
MTS Upstairs
F magazine will now be in envelope form – with a mix of material including a bound journalism based magazine as well as individual art, music or zine submissions. The envelope will also contain a map of art/music locations around Anchorage.
F envelope will focus on the Anchorage area only, to start with, and will have a first run of 100 copies. Ten locations will distribute and include a donation box next to the F stand. Both the distribution stand and the donation box will be provided by the F team.
The first F envelope edition will be released Feb. 1st, the Monday prior to the First Friday of February. Following issues will continued to be released the Mondays before the first Fridays of the month.
Those interested in reporting or in writing editorial pieces will have various deadlines and can email Teeka Ballas, teekaballas@yahoo.com with topic ideas or for an assignment.
Artists and musicians who wish to submit may contact artzinef@gmail.com The F envelope team can help problem solve ways to create 100 pieces of the artist or musician’s work. The deadline for submitting ideas is Friday January 22. The deadline for submitting 100 final pieces that fit into an 8 ½ by 11 inch envelope is Friday January 29.
Printing and assembly of pieces will take place Saturday and Sunday January 23 -24 in the MTS printshop studio. Envelope stuffing will take place Saturday and Sunday January 30 – 31 in the MTS printshop studio.
Distribution to predetermined local art and music venues will take place Monday February 1.
The bound journalism portion of F will include at least three articles plus at least one editorial.
Broadsidedpress.org has been suggested as a source for poetry and art combination insertions.
Lindsay Johnson has taken on the task of creating the art/music venue map of Anchorage.
During the past First Friday festivities one of the contributing artists had a sudden excruciating moment of regret about what he had chosen to portray and say in his Mumbles – zine entry. He has since made it his mission to block out and edit all the printed versions of F May 2009 and has asked that I block out his pages in the pdf.
F Magazine has two distinct styles – the two front sections are dedicated to a non-bias journalist approach to reporting on events, places, and people and the back section is dedicated to self expression. Where as pieces in the front journalism sections of the Magazine are edited by multiple people, the back zine portion was not designed to receive the editorial treatment. The recent events, where the freedom of personal expression was found regrettable by the author, has led me to question the editing process for the zine portion of F.
Ultimately I would like to keep the Mumbles – zine section, of F Magazine relatively unedited and open for artists’ personal expression. I would like to have space for critique of people or practices in the community, similar to the editorial or opinion section of other publications, if a critique is what an artist feels a need to portray or describe. However– I have been left deeply troubled by the recent shock-value-falseness followed by self censorship and I wonder what the ramifications of this one piece will have on F Magazine as a whole. Some art venues have refused to display or support F Magazine due to this one controversial and offending piece which is disheartening to the other volunteers who worked extremely hard on their own entries.
Because of this incident I will be highly wary of including pieces in F Magazine that make negative statements.
I welcome thoughts and feedback, especially on the topic of self-expresion in the zine ‘Mumbles’ section of F Magazine and the role editing should take on artists submissions.

Yes Anchorage, it is time to enjoy the beauty of F magazine. And even though some of the writers (me) were too busy to contribute and that probobly gave Gretchen a scare, it still looks great. Check it out on Magcloud.com search for f.
